Spartanburg, SC- Elizabeth Grubbs Champion, 91, wife of the late Dr. Francis Parker Champion, died Tuesday, October 31, 2017. Born August 24, 1926 in Spartanburg, SC, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Gentry and Martha Chaffin Grubbs. After her mother’s death when Betty was only 16 months old, she was reared by her grandmother, Mrs. James Chaffin. She was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing. Betty was Head Nurse of Pediatrics at Spartanburg General Hospital before working in the offices of Drs. Hammond and Herbert and Drs. Johnson, Elmore, and Adams. While her husband attended the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, she worked as Head Nurse of Pediatrics at Old Roper Hospital. Betty later owned and operated Betty Champion Gifts and King’s Row Gifts. She was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Betty is survived by her children, Elizabeth “Betsy” Heath Champion Powell and her husband, Elliott, of Columbia, SC and Francis Parker Champion, Jr. and his wife, Tory, of Spartanburg, SC; two granddaughters, Lindsay Champion Moore and her husband, John, of Lake Bowen, SC and Charlotte Heath Champion Flood and her husband, Matthew, of Spartanburg, SC; three grandsons, John Key Powell, Parker Champion Powell, and Austin Elliott Powell of Columbia, SC; a sister, Eddie Marie Bogan and her husband, Steedly, of Columbia, SC; special cousins, Carolyn Hooker and Billy Weaver; and several other cousins, nieces, and nephews. Graveside services will be held Saturday, November 4th, 10:00AM in West Oakwood Cemetery; 182 Oakwood Ave, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
