Elsie Vess Greer

Spartanburg – Elsie V. Greer, 97, wife of the late James Duncan Greer, died Thursday, August 31, 2017. She was born on February 22, 1920 to the late Thomas Leonard Vess and Lillie Belle Beheler Vess. Elsie spent her childhood in the Converse area where her first job was in payroll in the Converse Mill. She was graduate of Cecil’s Business College and retired from Wofford College Admissions Department. Elsie was a very generous lady who traveled internationally extensively, was an avid camper, and a member of the Tulip Garden Club. She was a Charter member of St. Paul’s Methodist Church. Elsie is survived by her son, James R. “Jim” Greer (Sandy) of Spartanburg; her brother, Thomas Lenel Vess (Gladys) of Pensacola FL; numerous nieces and nephews. She was blessed with a granddaughter, Angel G. Hjarding (Mark); two step grandchildren, Selena McAbee (Warren) and Jeff Snipes (Brandy); two great grandchildren, Patrick and Erik Hjarding; and five step great grandchildren. Elsie was predeceased by two brothers, Guy Leo Vess, John William Vess; her sister Lunette Vess Cudd; and a step grandson, Joe Snipes. The family will receive friends from 10:00AM to 10:45AM on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, followed by a funeral service at 11:00AM officiated by Reverend John Warren A private burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Building Fund; 1320 Fernwood Glendale Rd, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
