Dr. Frederick Cadwallader Swensen of Spartanburg passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 18, 2021, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Mary Black Campus.
Fred was born March 12, 1941, in New York City, New York to Verna and Joseph Swensen and grew up in Briarcliff Manor, New York. He attended Ossining High School in Ossining, New York, Reed College in Portland, Oregon and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He earned his medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine, was a Fellow of American College of Surgeons and was Board Certified in Plastic Surgery.
After earning his medical degree, Fred honorably served his country in the United States Air Force as a general surgeon in Homestead, Florida where he met his beloved wife, Anne Walker.
Upon completion of his residency and a fellowship in Plastic Surgery, Fred opened a private practice in Coral Gables, Florida where he practiced for four years. He and his family then moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina where he specialized in Reconstructive and Cosmetic Plastic Surgery in private practice and was a member of the Spartanburg Medical Center staff. Upon his retirement in 2008, he was named an honorary Medical Staff Member. Fred was known to his colleagues, nurses, and patients as a compassionate, caring physician.
In retirement, he enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, his three golden retrievers, his wife’s cooking, and his family.
Fred is survived by his wife of 49 years, Anne; two sons, Christian (Dawn) and Bryan (Phema Hester) of Spartanburg, SC; one brother, Paul Swensen (Sandra); one brother in-law, Steve Thomson; two nieces, Melissa Swensen Martin (John) and Elizabeth Swensen Hinkle (Kevin); one nephew, Matthew Thomson; and a host of loyal friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Kathryn.
A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.
