Garvin Ted Mason

September 23, 1939 — January 27, 2021

Garvin “Ted” Mason On January 27, 2021, Garvin Ted Mason of Moore, South Carolina, husband of the late Sandra Humphreys Mason, left this world and his earthly family. Ted, as he is known to most, was born on the 23rd day of September 1939, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to Charlie Odell Mason and Nora Cox Mason. As a graduate of James F. Byrnes high school, he excelled in Football. He received many college scholarships and even one to his favorite all time team, the Clemson Tigers! He joined the army in his early 20’s and it was there that he met the love of his life, Sandra Jean Humphreys who later became Sandra Humphreys Mason. They were married on November 22, 1963 in Charleston, WV, Sandys home town. They relocated to Spartanburg, SC after a few years. He later retired from Siemens in Roebuck, South Carolina. God, Country, Family. The epitome of a life well lived. Ted served his God with distinction as a Deacon at West Side Baptist Church. He served his Country with honor, having been stationed in a missile silo in Maryland during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He served his Family with an extraordinary commitment, leading with a clear vision, a disciplined approach and a gentle touch. He was a mentor to many and a friend to all, never failing to lend a hand, offer advice or a listening ear. Ted was a sports fan with a competitive spirit. Whether cheering his favorite team, racing anything with wheels ( including lawn mowers) or competing for the annual family world golf championship, he was in it to win it. He was a man of character daylight to dark, a principled man with great strength and love. His laugh was infectious and his smile lit up a room. The absence of his presence on this earth will be felt beyond measure, however, his legacy will live on in those he touched along the way. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Sandra Humphreys Mason, parents, Charlie Odell Mason and Nora Cox Mason, brother, Frank Mason, sister Mildred Mason Byars and his precious oldest grandson, Christopher Adam Cothran. He is survived by his son, Mark Mason (Melodie); his daughter, Jennifer Cothran (Kyle); grandchildren, Lyndsie Mason, Mackenzie Cothran, Mason Cothran and Noah Cothran; great-granddaughter, Waverlie Mason all of Spartanburg. He is also survived by his sister, Cindy Mason Gregg (David) of Moore, South Carolina and their daughters and grandchildren; among many other family members whom he treasured throughout his life. He was the most humble, kind, smart, wise and loving man and friend to all who knew him. He was a dedicated and heartfelt husband and a truly loving father to his children. He was a wonderful “Papa” to his grandchildren and great - grand daughter. Most of all, he was a man of God and this is his testimony. We will miss you always. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the family will not be receiving friends or holding an open funeral or memorial service.
