Spartanburg, SC- George Z Dunn, Jr., died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, May 10, 2017. George was born on May 27, 1931, in Pascoag, Rhode Island to Vesta and George Z Dunn, Sr. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI and received his Master’s degree from the Institute of Textile Technology in Charlottesville, VA. George met his wife, Carol Jacob, at a square dance at Emory University, and they were still dancing in their 62nd year of marriage. George had a 44-year career at Milliken & Co. which brought him and Carol in 1972 to Spartanburg, their cherished home. George was a man of deep and abiding faith in God. An elder at First Presbyterian Church, he sang in the choir for 45 years and led in the development of the Morning Song contemporary service. In the summers, he was a beloved leader in the life of Wee Kirk Presbyterian Church in Linville, NC. George loved his children. He and Carol, together, worked to give them roots and wings. In addition to his wife, George is survived by: son, Charles William Dunn of Springfield MO, wife Laura, and grandchildren Charlie, Annie, Madeline and Isabelle Dunn; daughter, Carol Ann Anderson of Louisville KY, husband Steve, and grandchildren Knox, Elizabeth, Catherine and George Anderson; and daughter, Mary Helen Wade of Spartanburg, husband Gregg, and grandchildren Marshall and wife Jing, Emily, Sarah and Ashley Wade. George was the youngest of six, with five older sisters Mary, Thelma, Joyce, Evelyn and predeceased by sister Gertrude. George was a gentleman and a gentle man. His family and many friends of all ages will miss George’s twinkling eyes and precious smile. A Service of Witness to the Resurrection celebrating the life of George will be held on Monday, May 15th, 4PM at First Presbyterian Church, 393 East Main Street, Spartanburg SC. Visitation with the family will follow the service.
