Spartanburg, SC- Gerald William Gowan, 83, husband of Emily Ruth Coker Gowan, passed away on Friday, December 31, 2021 at his home after many years of declining health. Born September 6, 1938 in Spartanburg, SC, Gerald was a son of the late Otis Arthur and Mary Alberta Smith Gowan. He was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and honorably served his country in the US Army National Guard. During his service, he was awarded the US Army Achievement Medal, the US Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, US Army Forces Reserve Medal with Two Hourglasses, SC Active State Service Medal (30 years), and special schooling/training (military and civilian). Mr. Gowan was also awarded the National Guard Retirement Medal after 32 years of service. He was a Loom Fixer and retired from Spartan Mills. Mr. Gowan was a member of the Roebuck Masonic Lodge and the Mary Montgomery’s Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid Clemson Football fan. In addition to his wife, Emily, of 60 years, he is survived by his daughter, Sandy L. Greene; his son, Steve Gowan; granddaughters, Candy Smith (Keith) and Jessica Greene; great grandson, Julius Smith; great granddaughters, Kylie and Makayla Smith; and a sister, Rachel Martin (Trent). He was predeceased by a son in-law, Tracy Greene; and brothers, Donald, Frankie, and Joe Gowan. Graveside services with military honors will be held Wednesday, January 5th, 2:00PM in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, officiated by Pastor Frankie Taylor. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 3000 Stone Station Road, Roebuck, SC 29376. Prayers have been answered.. GOD the great physician has healed him.
