Gloria M. Pennell Mrs. Richard Hamer Pennell of Dallas, Texas, and Greenville, South Carolina, died on Sunday, May 17, 2020. She was the former Gloria Dawn McElroy of Dallas, where she maintained a home. A private celebration of her life will be held in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She attended North Dallas High School and graduated from Highland Park High School at the age of fifteen. She attended Mills College in Oakland, California, and was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Sweet Briar College (Virginia), and from The University of Texas at Austin with a Master of Arts in French. She taught at The Hockaday School, The Greenhill School, and Southern Methodist University in Dallas; Northwood University in Cedar Hill, Texas; and The Spartanburg Day School. She had been a staff writer for the Dallas Times Herald, a contributor to Christian Science periodicals, and a volunteer tutor with adult literacy programs. She was a member of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass., and of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Greenville; The Junior League of Dallas, Inc.; and Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She is predeceased by her son, Benjamin Howard Read, and her brothers, Howard D., Benjamin Thomas, and James Daniel McElroy. She is survived by her husband, Richard Hamer Pennell of Greenville, and two sons and daughters-in-law: Mike Read and his daughters, Kaitlyn and Mikaela; Shane and Linda Read and their children, Caroline, Will, and Christopher; and Hollie Read and her children, Scott, Jenna, and Rachel; and a stepson and daughter-in-law, Richard Pennell, Jr. and Nancy and their children, Allen, Richard, and Jim, all of Greenville; and a stepdaughter, Susan Towson, of Spartanburg.
