Gwen Tootle Howell joined the love of her long and beautiful life, Louis Peyton Howell, on March 25, 2024.
She entered heaven in the hands of her three children, Lyn Howell, Sully Howell Beckham (Gordon), and Louis Peyton Howell, Jr. (Alice). She was born a gracious southern lady in Savannah, Georgia on September 22, 1933, to Malcolm Ernest Tootle and Merle Burroughs Tootle. Gwen grew up in Florence, South Carolina and was one of the "Florence Girls" known at the Beach for their beauty and their brains.
She attended the University of South Carolina where she was Homecoming Queen, Secretary of the Student Body, and a cheerleader for the Gamecocks. She met the love of her life, Louis, on the historic horseshoe and they began their life together in Cherry Point, NC and Columbia, SC before landing in Spartanburg, SC when Louis started his career as a lawyer. Gwen and Louis were the loving, unselfish, and devoted parents of Lyn, Sully, and Peyton. She was Gwenmama to 8 grandchildren, William Hastings Hensel (Lee), Elise Gelzer Hensel (Nick), Harriett Howell Hensel Mercer (Trevor), James Gordon Beckham III (Brittany), Gwendolyn Margaret Beckham Sanford (Laddie), Louisa Grace McCamish Beckham Knotts (Griffin), Louis Peyton Howell III (Blaire), and Madison Cobb Howell (Rachel).
She welcomed into this life her great grandchildren, Sully Howell Sanford, Lawrence Hunt Sanford V, James Behr Sanford, James Gordon Beckham IV, Bode Fletcher Beckham, Louis Peyton Howell IV, Madison Gray Howell, Henry Ward Knotts and Malcolm Dane Mercer. She devoted many hours to the Church of the Advent, starting as Secretary to Capers Satterlee and then as an Altar Guild member, Bazaar Contributor. She was known for her fabulous Cheese Straws.
Gwen leaves behind so many close friends: The Friday Lunch Bunch, The Tea and Topics Book Club and The Tome and Tare Garden Club.
Memorial services will be 11:00am on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at Episcopal Church of the Advent.
The family suggests that any memorials for Gwen's life be sent to her beloved Church of the Advent where she will rest beside Louis once again and forever.
