Harold Martin Gowan, 87, married to Jo Ann Gwinn Gowan for almost 70 years, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024. He was born on February 11, 1937, to the late Virginia Bulman and James Martin Gowan. He is also pre-deceased by his sister Ruth Gowan Guest.
Harold was a proud graduate of Roebuck High School, a Navy Veteran, and a member of First Baptist Church. He enjoyed a successful career in both the automotive and insurance industries. He was a dedicated fan of Dorman High School sporting events and South Carolina football, where he found joy in cheering on the Cavaliers with his close friend, Wendell Lee. Harold was truly a cut-up who loved to laugh and to make others laugh. One of the highlights of his life was saving a man's life, an act of bravery, that earned him recognition in the Spartanburg Magazine.
Harold is survived by his beloved wife, Jo Ann; his son, Dennis Gowan (Susan) of Spartanburg; and his cherished grandchildren, Nathan Gowan (Jordan) and Allison Baucom (Joe). He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Ellie, Sawyer, Margot, Bo and Rosamund. Also, Harold is survived by numerous other family members including his cousin, Donald Bishop, who was like a brother to him and a faithful friend.
As Harold faced his final days with his trademark strong will and determination, he found peace in the Lord, trusting Him fully to carry him to his eternal home.
A visitation in honor of Harold will be held on Thursday, November 7th, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the J.M. Dunbar Funeral Home.
A private family burial will be held on November 12 at 2:00 pm at the Dolly Cooper Military Cemetery in Anderson, South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
