Henrietta Morrison Lowndes, age 92, died peacefully at home in Spartanburg, South Carolina on Saturday, February 22, 2025. “Rhetta” was born in Charleston, South Carolina on July 21, 1932 to the late Caroline Sams and William McGillivray Morrison.
Rhetta is survived by her beloved husband of 70 years, William Lowndes III, and their three children: William Lowndes IV and his wife, Elizabeth, of Spartanburg, South Carolina; Caroline Morrison Lowndes and her husband, Robert Nacron, of New York, New York; Anne Lowndes Maggiari and her husband, Massimo, of John’s Island, South Carolina; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Rhetta was predeceased by her brothers, William McGillivray Morrison Jr. and John Earle Morrison. Her son, Thomas Huguenin Lowndes, died in infancy.
Raised in Charleston, Rhetta graduated from Ashley Hall, attended Converse College and graduated from the University of South Carolina. For most of their married life, she and Bill made Spartanburg their home. Rhetta was an active member of The Episcopal Church of the Advent, where she taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Colonial Dames in the state of South Carolina, The Huguenot Society of South Carolina, The Junior League of Spartanburg, Fortnightly Garden Club, and a past president of the Assembly.
Rhetta was devoted to her family and friends. She will be dearly missed and remembered for her easy laugh, keen sense of humor, and warmth.
Funeral services will be 12:00pm on Friday, February 28, 2025 at The Episcopal Church of the Advent, conducted by Rev. Paula Griffin. A reception in the Parish Life Center will immediately follow the services. Private burial will be held in Christ Church Episcopal Cemetery.
In remembrance of Rhetta, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
