Henry Frederick "Fred" Butehorn, Jr.

July 1, 1943 — February 1, 2022

Henry Frederick "Fred" Butehorn , Jr,  MD was born on July 1, 1943 in Charleston, South Carolina and passed away on February 1, 2022 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. 

Fred was married to the late Joan Dominick Butehorn of Newberry.  After his undergraduate education at Clemson and the University of South Carolina, he received is MD from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1969.  He went on to complete his Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery training at MUSC in 1974.  After his training, he then served in the Air Force at Incirlik Air Base in Adana, Turkey.  Joan then requested the family return to South Carolina.  He was a physician at Greenwood Ear, Nose, and Throat for two years and then joined Spartanburg Ear, Nose and Throat.  He practiced there for 33 years and retired in 2012.  In his retirement, he moved to Summerville, SC with his second wife, Sharon Baxley Butehorn.  Upon her untimely death, he returned to Spartanburg and lived until his unanticipated sudden death.  

He cherished his time as a physician and took great pride in the care of his patients. He loved his family and friends, many of whom he met through his work or his church, St. John's Lutheran.  He enjoyed travel, sailing, snow skiing, singing in the choir, and, at times, watching Gamecock football. 

He is predeceased by his father, Henry F Butehorn, Sr of Charleston, and his mother, Louise Meta Brandt Butehorn of Walhalla.  He is survived by his two sons and their families, all of Spartanburg, Henry F. "Fritz" Butehorn, III, MD, his wife, Lori Joseph Butehorn, and their  children, Hank and Sophie; and Jon Christopher Butehorn, his wife, Caroline Moses Butehorn, and their children, Darby and Emory.

A celebration of Fred's life will be held at 4pm, Saturday, February 19, 2022 at his beloved St. John's Lutheran Church in Spartanburg.
