James “Leon” Cunningham, 84, of Inman, SC passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2025. He was born on June 27, 1940 in Spartanburg, SC to the late Eloree Cartee Cunningham.
Leon was a proud graduate of Byrnes High School and Spartanburg Methodist College. He was employed for 30 years with Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System’s Family Medicine Center, where he served as a crucial part of the administrative team.
A devout Christian, Leon was an active member of First North, where he served faithfully as a deacon and contributed his beautiful voice to the church choir. His unwavering faith and commitment to his church family were a testament to the love he shared with others. Leon had a natural gift for making everyone feel seen, valued, and loved. His warmth, generosity, and sense of humor left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
Leon had a passion for collecting antiques, finding joy in the history and stories behind each item. He also cherished time spent with his family at Pawley’s Island, where he created many treasured memories.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Catherine Sanders Cunningham; brother, Jimmy Cunningham; several nieces and nephews and three God-children. He was predeceased by his sister, Pat Tucker.
Visitation will be 11:00-11:45am on Friday, March 28, 2025 at First North. Memorial services will follow at 12:00pm, conducted by Rev. Mike Hamlett.
