James Edwin “Jim” Shearer, 82, of Spartanburg, SC passed away peacefully on Friday, January 5, 2024, at Spartanburg Regional Heart Center. Born July 22, 1941, in Indiana, PA, he was the son of the late Gladys Walls Shearer and Samuel Jefferson Shearer. After graduating from Indiana High School in 1959, James honorably served his country in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Charleston Air Force Base in North Charleston, SC. After his military service, James was employed by Lockheed Martin in Marietta, GA. He then accepted a position with the Federal Aviation Administration in Spartanburg, SC. He spent 30 years with the FAA and retired in 2001. James served for many years as an usher at St. James United Methodist Church. He also enjoyed his time as a member of the West View Ruritan Club. His hobbies included woodworking, eating out with friends, spending time with his pets, and watching numerous sporting events. He especially enjoyed watching golf, auto racing, Dorman Cavalier football, and his favorite Pittsburgh Steelers. James is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Carol Moore Shearer; his daughter, Christy Shearer Nichols; son-in-law, Curtis Lynn Nichols, Jr.; his cherished grandchildren, Coleman Lewis Nichols and Ella Caroline Nichols; and his sister, Trudy Shearer Lutz. He was predeceased by his oldest sister, Loretta Jane Shearer. Visitation will be held from 9:45 am until 10:45 am on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at J.M. Dunbar Funeral Home, 690 Southport Road, Roebuck, SC 29376. The funeral service, conducted by Rev. Brad Gray, will follow at 11:00 am in the chapel. Burial with Military Honors will immediately follow in Westwood Memorial Gardens, 6101 Reidville Road, Moore, SC 29369. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Agape Care of South Carolina, 187 North Church Street, Suite 201, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
