James Oliver Thomason, Jr., 53 of Spartanburg passed away on January 8, 2024. James was born in Spartanburg on September 1, 1970. He was the son of the late Beverly Roberts Thomason and the late James Oliver Thomason, Sr. James is survived by his stepmother, Martha Thomason, of Spartanburg, brothers Louis Smith (Carter) of Spartanburg, Geoffrey Smith (Lois) of Mount Pleasant, Scott Thomason (Kimberly) of Spartanburg, sisters Audrey Thomason Hope (Christian) of Spartanburg, Resa Thomason of Aston, PA, Caroline Gunnells (Stephen) of Spartanburg, nieces, nephews and countless dear friends. James had a lifelong love of bicycles. He grew up racing BMX and dirt bikes, and as an adult became an avid mountain biker. He was happiest on two wheels out on a trail. Known for his willingness to always lend a hand, James dedicated hours building bike trails, and the city bike park so that others could share in the joy he found in the sport. A celebration of James’s life will be held on Sunday, January 14 at 2:00 PM at JM Dunbar Funeral Home, 690 Southport Road, Roebuck. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in James’s memory to the Bike Park/Partners for Active Living.
