Janice Lea Holm Lloyd

Janice “Jan” Lea Holm Lloyd, age 90, passed away at the Hospice Home in Spartanburg, SC on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. Janice was born in Denmark, KS on September 19, 1933 to Hypatia “Pat” Wilcox Holm and Lionel “Pete” Holm. Pete’s military service during World War II required the family to move frequently to several different communities in Kansas and Texas, and the family settled in Arlington, Virginia. Jan graduated as class valedictorian from Washington and Lee High School in 1951. She attended Penn State University where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics, and upon graduation, married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Thomas Henry Lloyd, Jr., in 1956. They remained happily married for 67 years until his death in 2023.

Making the world a better place through service to others was Jan’s life-long passion. Her giving spirit and steadfast moral compass was evident in her personal life as a loving daughter, sister, wife and mother. These values also defined her career, which began in Arlington, VA where she taught home economics for five years before adopting her two children, Cassie and Jeff. Tom’s career eventually led the family to Columbia, MO, where Jan earned her Master’s degree in Family Economics at the University of Missouri. She taught home economics classes at William Woods College in Fulton, MO from 1975-1976, and resumed her career in 1979 at the Michigan Consumer Education Center at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI. Jan finished her career at NC State University in Raleigh, NC, where she served for 17 years as a Family Money Management Specialist. During her tenure at NC State, Jan developed Family Money Management curriculum and traveled to every County in NC to train County Extension Agents each year. 

She and Tom retired in Edenton, NC, where they owned a sailboat and spent many happy hours sailing in the Edenton Bay. They later moved to Clinton, SC, where they spent seven years, and finally to Orange County, NC in 2015, where the Lloyd family has resided since the early 1700s. 

Jan is survived by her sister, Patricia Holm Lister of Annandale, VA; daughter, Cassie Lloyd (Joe Remoll) of Moore, SC; son, Jeff Lloyd (Amy Moore) of Columbus, OK; four grandchildren, Claire Lloyd Remoll of Moore, SC, Jackson, Zachary and Caroline Lloyd of Columbus, OH; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Tom Lloyd, and brothers, Duayne Holm (Ce), and Wayne Holm (Agnes).

A private memorial service will be held in Edenton at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity benefiting education or families.
