Joel McCrea Smith of Roebuck, SC, beloved husband of Katherine M. Smith for 64 years, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2024 at the age of 87. He was born in Spartanburg, SC on July 14, 1937 to the late Marie and Randall “Bud” Smith.
A 1960 graduate of Clemson University with a Bachelor’s in Textile Science, Joel took great pride in his alma mater. He was a lifelong supporter of Clemson Football and IPTAY. After completing his education, Joel served his country as a proud member of the National Guard.
Joel was the owner and operator of RANJO, Inc., a successful metal fabricating business he built with his father and led for 35 years. A true self-made man, he was known for his tireless work ethic and ability to master any challenge. Whether fixing machinery, solving problems around the house, or simply lending a helping hand, Joel was dependable and honest, earning the admiration and trust of all who knew him.
A man with a great sense of humor and a heart full of generosity, Joel was a long-time member of Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church. His devotion to his family was unmatched, and he cherished the time spent with his grandsons, who were his pride and joy.
Along with his wife, he is also survived by his daughters, Rhonda S. Dellinger and Sondra Smith-Adcock (Jon); grandsons, Samuel Smith Dellinger, Joel Calvin Adcock, and Cary Thomas Adcock; sisters, Brenda Kay Smith and Judy Smith Divita (Charlie); nieces, Tracy Rice (Troy) and Ryan Sargent (Josh); and four great nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Hollis Eugene Smith and Johnnie Preston Smith.
Memorial services will be 3:00pm on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at J. M. Dunbar Funeral Home, 690 Southport Road, Roebuck, SC 29376. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 2:00 PM.
In honor of Joel, memorial contributions may be made to Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 279, Pauline, SC 29374 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
