Spartanburg, SC- John Lee Shaw, Sr., 82, husband of Barbara Jean Vincent Shaw,
passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 5, 2023 at the Spartanburg Regional
Hospice Home.
Born in Newton, NC on October 29, 1940, John and his late brother Wayne Shaw, was
a son of the late Ralph James Shaw and Wilma Inez Keener Shaw. He worked as a
carpenter and eventually a property manager for Rich’s (now known as Macys) before
retirement, managed the lighting of the Richs Great Tree and implemented capital
projects in power and recycling programs now known as sustainability. John was a
journeyman carpenter and built homes, beautiful cabinets, and various furniture pieces.
John and Barbara were married 62 years ago in Atlanta, GA, and their life is one of
service, missions and love for each other. He and Barbara served alongside each other
in various capacities in local churches. John was ordained as a deacon and taught
carpentry to inner city youth in Atlanta at the Lucille Ave Baptist Mission center during
the sixties. They were youth pastors and supported domestic and international
missions. John and Barbara in SW Atlanta took countless youth to the Ridgecrest
Baptist Conference Center for over 20 years and shared his love of the Lord and the
mountains. John assembled and trained men to serve their churches with building
maintenance and implemented power sustainability programs. Since relocating to
Spartanburg, they have been active members of The Church at the Mill.
Mr. Shaw was a recreational hunter and angler. In his downtime, he was sure to be
found working in his workshop and helping his neighbors. He preferred the Mountains
to the beach on any occasion, and particularly loved the Blueridge Parkway and
Grandfather Mountain. Mr. Shaw relished any time spent with his wife and beloved
family.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, John is survived by his son, John Shaw (Kerry) of
Spartanburg, SC; his daughter, Rebecca S. Campbell (Mark) of Canton, GA, his brother,
