Jonathan (Jon) David Burwell, 62, of 297 South Highpoint Road, passed away Friday, September 9, 2022 at his home while comforted by his longtime companion, Robin Bridges.
Jon was born February 16, 1960 in Spartanburg, South Carolina and grew up in the Cedar Acres subdivision. He was the youngest child of the late Jack Oliver Burwell, Sr. and Verle Thomas Burwell.
Jon graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1978. While attending Spartanburg High School, he excelled in playing percussion instruments and was part of the school’s marching band. He continued applying his exceptional musical skills and played the drums for a variety of regional bands, including Lindy and the Night Howlers, and with various recording studios throughout his early life. When Jon was not playing the drums or writing music, he worked as a Service Technician with Bell Music Machine Corporation. Many of his friends and patrons called him “Johnny Pops”.
Jon had four brothers and one sister. He was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas Pendleton Burwell and Joseph Glenn Burwell. Jon is survived by his brother, Col Jack O. Burwell, Jr and his wife, Margaret, of Mount Pleasant, SC; sister, Judith B. Martin of Spartanburg, SC; brother, Dr. Timothy H. Burwell and his wife, Lisa, of Boone, NC; and ten nieces & nephews,respectively.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, September 13th, 1PM in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind Foundation, 355 Cedar Springs Road, Spartanburg SC 29302; Music Ministry at Bethel United Methodist Church, 245 S. Church St, Spartanburg, SC 29306; or a charity of one’s choice.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home Care team for their care and support during the final stage of Jon’s extended illness.
