Roebuck, SC- Joy Sandlin Galloway, 78, loving and devoted wife of John Nesbitt Galloway for 53 years, passed away on Friday morning, May 5, 2023 in her home surrounded by her family.
In addition to her husband, John, she is survived by her son, David Galloway; her daughter, Tori Galloway Hilton (Justin); and grandchildren, Flash Nesbitt Galloway, Mila Kathryn Hilton, Lorelei Marie Hilton, and Beau John Hilton.
Born January 5, 1945 in Greer, SC, Joy was the daughter of the late Edward Sandlin and Jennie Hughes Sandlin West. She attended Byrnes High School (Class of 1963), where she played basketball, winning 2 state championships under the leadership of Coach Emily N. Myers. Joy went on to graduate with her Master Degree in Education from Converse College. She began teaching primarily in District 6 and inspired countless students for 40 years. She taught at Fairforest Junior High School (10 years); Dorman High School (20 years); University School of Spartanburg County (5 years); and Polk County High School (5 years). She retired from education in the states of South Carolina and North Carolina in 2007.
Joy pursued the fast-paced environment as a pharmacy technician for 8 years before fully retiring to her greatest adventure, as “Mimi.” She loved nothing more than being swept up by the beautiful chaos of her grandchildren.
Joy was a devoted wife and mother; a Godly woman who served Mount Calvary Presbyterian Church as the nursery coordinator for 13 years and was a faithful member her entire adult life.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her stepfather, Jesse Ernest West, Jr.
The family will receive friends Sunday, May 7th, 3-5PM at Dunbar Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 8th, 3:00PM at Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Church, officiated by Reverend Richard Thomas. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.
