Spartanburg, SC- Lamar Gibbs Hammett, 80, husband of Dian Shaylor Hammett, died Monday, January 8, 2018. Born February 26, 1937 in Great Falls, SC, Lamar was a son of the late Horace Greeley and Lorene Woody Hammett. He was a graduate of Dreher High School, class of 1955, in Columbia, SC and the University of South Carolina, class of 1959, where he played tackle, both offense and defense, for the Carolina Gamecocks. After earning his Business Administration degree from USC, Lamar attended Louisiana State University School of Banking and University of Oklahoma National Commercial Lending Graduate School. Lamar honorably served his country in the US Army National Guard as Chief Warrant Officer for 28 years. He has also served in Senior Officer/City Executive positions for South Carolina National and Wachovia in Columbia, Bamberg, Spartanburg, Gaffney, and Georgetown, SC. In 1997, he retired from Wachovia and worked for Plantation Federal in Pawley’s Island, SC. Lamar retired from the banking industry after 50 years of service. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg. Lamar was also a member of the University of South Carolina Gamecock Club, the USC Association of Letterman, and a lifelong supporter of Gamecock football. In addition to that, he was a supporter and served on boards of the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, and The Salvation Army. In addition to his wife of 57 years, Lamar is survived by his children, Edward Gibbs Hammett and his wife, Jeannine, and their children, Camille and Gunnar, of Concord, NC, and Leslie Hammett Westbrook and her husband, Terry, of Cross Hill, SC and their children, Amanda and Thomas of Gilbert, AZ; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, O. W. “Woody” Hammett. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 13th, 11:00AM at First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg Chapel, officiated by The Reverend Joanne Hull. A celebration of life reception will follow at Summit Hills. Interment with military honors will be held Sunday, January 14th, 3PM at the Elmwood Cemetery Chapel, 501 Elmwood Ave, Columbia, SC 29201.
