Linwood J. Harris of Moore, SC quietly passed away at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home on November 2, 2024. He was born September 27, 1944 to the late Elzie and Myrtie Harris.
A 1970 graduate of North Carolina State University School of Textiles, Linwood enjoyed a career in both the development of knitting technology and later, the Japanese trading company industries. He and his wife, Linda, met as students at NC State. Linwood served in both the US Army and the NC National Guard. A college summer job in Luxembourg taught Linwood he could easily travel and make friends throughout the world.
Linwood was a teacher, group leader, deacon, and choir member for many years at First North. He had become a follower of Christ as an adult, and happily sought opportunities to share his faith. His passion included serving as a Volunteer Chaplain in the Spartanburg County Jails and as a Faith Home Board Member. A dedicated SRHS Volunteer, Linwood trained his golden doodle, Peaches, to visit patients with him.
In his retirement years, he became a successful beekeeper and was known for producing dark, rich honey from his hives located on the Middle Tyger River. He also became an SC State Park Volunteer, and especially loved working at Myrtle Beach State Park and Croft State Park. He was an avid boater, fisherman, camper, and traveler. He taught the Everette boys about the outdoors, and a highlight of his retirement was taking these 3 grandsons to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. Linwood and his son, Matthew, loved motorcycling together; their bike travels included a round trip across the US and up the Pacific Coast Highway. The delight of Linwood’s older years became the arrival of his “surprise” grandchildren, Walker and Elizabeth Jean.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Walker Harris; children, Matthew Harris (Emilee), Elizabeth Everette (Jonathan), and Stephanie Harris (Doug Rosenberg); grandchildren, Nathan, Matthew, and Levi Everette, Walker Rosenberg and Elizabeth Jean Harris Rosenberg; and sister, Judy Shirley. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Louise Elmore and George Harris.
A service of Remembrance will be held on Friday, November 8th, 2024, 3PM, at Hub City Church in Spartanburg, SC. The family will receive friends starting at 2:30 PM at the Church.
In honor of Linwood’s passion for supporting suffering children, and his past financial support, donations may be made to Alex’s House Orphanage in Haiti via Hub City Church Spartanburg. Alex’s House and the children’s lives have been devastated by the gang violence in Haiti.
