Prominent Spartanburg architect, Marion Carlisle McGarity, Jr., after several years of failing health, has died at the age of 93. Born in Chester, SC on March 23, 1928, he was the son of the late Marion Carlisle McGarity, Sr. and Mary Young McGarity. Carlisle was a veteran of the Korean War era and a graduate of Clemson University. During his career, he was very active in the American Institute of Architects and held numerous positions in that organization. Carlisle, a member of First Presbyterian Church, loved his family, his friends, and his wire haired Fox Terrier, Capers. He also enjoyed traveling and over the years had numerous opportunities to travel both domestically and abroad with Ireland being his destination of choice. Carlisle is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Linda Grubb McGarity; one son, Dr. Newman Carlisle McGarity (Sherry) of Spartanburg, SC; three grandchildren, Allison McGarity of Greenville, SC, Dr. Patrick McGarity (Leslie) of Charleston, SC, Morgan McGarity of Boiling Springs, SC; one sister, Mary McGarity Seaman of Proctorville, NC and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Carlisle was predeceased by his first wife, Odetta Henderson McGarity; a brother, John Madison McGarity; and a sister, Nancy McGarity Westmoreland. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 23rd, 11:00AM at First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg. A private burial will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
