Max Barnard Hollis

SPARTANBURG, SC – Max B. Hollis, age 86, wife of J. Thomas Hollis (Tom), died on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at home.  Born December 9, 1930 in Lynchburg, Virginia, Max was the daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth (McDaniel) and Fredrick Lynde-Wood Barnard.  Max and Tom just recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.  Max graduated from Converse College in 1951.  She was an active member of The Episcopal Church of the Advent, The Junior League of Spartanburg, The Tome and Tare Garden Club, and The Assembly.  Most importantly, Max was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a dear friend.  In addition to her husband, Max is survived by her three children, Elizabeth Hollis Wood (Libby) and her husband, Steve, of Spartanburg, J. Thomas Hollis, Jr. (Tommy) and his wife, Jill, of Raleigh, NC, and Lynde  Hollis Blanton and her husband John, of Longmeadow, MA; her four grandchildren, Thomas Steven Wood (Toby) and his wife, Virginia, Margaret Wood Delaney (Maggie) and her husband, Brendan, Elizabeth Bibb Wood (Liza), and John Stanley Blanton, III (Jack); five great grandchildren, Brendan Patrick Delaney, Louise McDaniel Delaney, Mabel Elizabeth Delaney, Susannah Hollis Wood, and Edith Lynde Wood.  Max is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and close friends, who will dearly miss her. The family wishes to extend their deep appreciation to Max’s faithful caregivers, Nikki Eye, Vena Mizell, and Wilma Dominick, who have helped us all over the past 3 years. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 28th at 2:00pm at the Episcopal Church of the Advent.  A reception will follow at the Parish Community Life Center.
