Spartanburg, SC- Norma Jean Smith Powers, 85, wife of the late William Burton Powers, died Sunday, October 21, 2018. Born May 23, 1933 in Converse, SC, Norma was a daughter of the late Troy Richard Smith, Sr. and Edna Inez Mayton Smith. She was a graduate of Spartanburg High School, class of 1951, where she played on the Allstar Basketball team. Norma was a devoted mother of five, spending many years caring for her children. Her creativity was manifested in her drawing, sketching, paintings, and ceramics. Norma was very social and enjoyed the time she spent with family and friends. She was a longtime member of Southside Baptist Church. She is survived by her sons, William M. Powers and Timothy E. Powers (Stephanie); her daughters, Monica P. Goforth, Teresa P. Casada (Victor), and Tami Powers; grandchildren, Joshua Goforth, Emily Casada, John Michael Powers, and Heather Etheredge (Drew); great grandson, Carson Etheredge; and her sister, Nancy J. Hamilton (Robert). In addition to her husband, Norma was predeceased by a grandson, Troy W. Casada; a brother, Troy R. Smith, Jr.; and sisters, Patricia Smith and Eleanor Smith. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, October 24th, 1:00PM at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, officiated by Reverend Dr. Schuyler Peterson. The family will be at the home of Timothy and Stephanie Powers. In remembrance of Norma, memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 316 S. Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
