Ronald Vernon Killian

January 3, 1938 — October 30, 2022

Ronald Vernon Killian, U.S. history teacher and author, died October 30, 2022 at his home in Spartanburg, SC.  Born January 3, 1938 in Great Falls, SC, He was the son of the late Sam Killian and Gladys Ellisor Killian. 

He was raised by grandparents Vernon Killian and Eva (nee, Jones) Killian of Great Falls, SC.

Ronald received a bachelor's degree from USC in Columbia, and a Master’s degree from Auburn University.

A public educator of 41 years, he taught US history and coached girls basketball in Georgetown County Schools for 5 years prior to teaching at PM Dorman High School for 36 years. 

An avid US Civil War scholar with a particular interest in lesser known generals of the Union Army, he is the author of three books on the subject. 

He loved classical music, especially Beethoven. He also enjoyed reading and long daily walks. He was a veteran of the US Navy and a member of Second Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg.

He is survived by his loving wife Brenda (nee, Gulley) of 65 years, his daughter, Marty Killian of Spartanburg, and his son Ron Killian of Asheville, NC. On his father's side, he is survived by his brother Fred Killian of Virginia, sister Maryanne Bowman (David) of Mooresville NC, brothers, Lee Killian (Karen), David Killian, Carl Killian and Steve Killian of Charlotte, NC, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. On his mother's side, he is survived by two sisters, Deb Mitkus and Denise Anne Mitkus Neuss originally of Westfield, NJ. 

A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 10th, 11:00 AM at Dunbar Funeral Home, officiated by Reverend Dr. Todd Lowe. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the non-profit, Spartanburg Regional Hospice or Animal Allies of Spartanburg County.
