Spartanburg, SC- Samuel Anthony Messel, 80, husband of Charlotte Kathryn Perret Messel, died Wednesday, July 7, 2021. Born September 22, 1940 in Vincennes, Indiana, Mr. Messel was a son of the late Jess Lorenzo Messel and Ida Elizabeth Hatton Messel. He honorably served his country in the US Air Force for 20 years before his retirement. During his service, Mr. Messel received a Silver Star for aiding in a rescue operation during the Vietnam War, a Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and a Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal with Palm. He was a prominent, volunteer scout leader in the Palmetto Council for 15 years. Mr. Messel loved to hunt, fish, and canoe, and shared his great mentorship with many over the years. Mr. Messel retired from Aden Bonded Warehouse after 17 years and owned and operated his own business until 2003. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Michael Anthony Messel and his wife, Debbie, and David Samuel Messel; grandchildren, Tyler Andrew Messel and Adam Nicholas Messel and his wife, Kellyn; a brother, Jess. L. Messel, II; and a sister, Rosemary Alice Messel Ellett. He was predeceased by a sister, Charlotte Joan Messel Hollen. Services will be held at a later date.
