Sarah Bowman Cooper

August 24, 1930 — March 12, 2022

Spartanburg, SC- Sarah Arnold Bowman Cooper, wife of the late Henry Pearson Cooper, Sr., passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at White Oak Estates.

Born August 24, 1930 in Lowndesville, SC to the late William Luther Bowman, Jr. and Mollie Elizabeth Storey, she was the oldest of three children which included George Bowman and the late Luther Bowman. Sarah was predeceased by her oldest son, Pearson Cooper. She is survived by her son, William Cooper, her daughter, Martha Cooper Ott, nine grandchildren and one great grandson.

Sarah was a graduate of Winthrop College where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics and Institutional Management. She was employed several years at Greenville General Hospital as Administrative Dietitian. She also taught ninth grade Science at Greenville Junior High and at Hughes Junior High before moving to Spartanburg to work in private Kindergarten. Sarah then earned a Master’s degree at Converse College and spent the next 19 years teaching Earth Science at Cowpens High School, then at Cowpens Junior High, where she was honored as the Conservation Teacher of the Year. Her students affectionately called her “Super Cooper,” as she was passionate about sharing her love of stars, rocks and everything earthy. Sarah was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa and the American Association of University Women.

Sarah has been a loyal member of Trinity United Methodist Church for over 60 years and has served in many areas, including teaching Sunday School and Kindergarten. She was literature secretary many years and was also very active in the United Methodist Women, serving as president and in other positions.

Sarah was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor and a young spirit. She will be remembered as a proud and devoted mother and grandmother, who was so very loved by her family and all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 20th, 3:00PM at Trinity United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.
