Spartanburg, SC- On Wednesday morning, March 8th, Sue Cooper, 86, reached out and touched the face of God, entering her eternal resting place. Born May 17, 1936, in Salisbury, NC, she was the youngest of five children born to Lonnie H. and Beulah Maye Lyerly Earnhardt. She attended Salisbury City Schools and graduated from Boyden High School in 1954.
She married her high school sweetheart, Gary “Hunky” Cooper, and they celebrated 64 years together, before his passing in 2019.
She is survived by her daughters, Terri L. Cooper of Greenwood, SC, Jennifer Cash (David) of Spartanburg SC, Christie Simister (Scott) of Greenville, SC; and a beloved grandson, Spencer Simister, who was the apple of her eye. Also surviving are several treasured nieces and nephews and their families.
Living life to the fullest, she was a dedicated wife, mother and friend. She practiced her faith by volunteering in various ministries at Park Hills Baptist Church, Oak Grove Baptist Church, and Covenant Baptist Church where she was a current member. She enjoyed organizing Golden Age senior bus trips which took them coast to coast. She was frequently called “Momma Sue” because of her kind and loving spirit and was always willing to lend a helping hand to others.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 15th, 2:00-3:15 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home. A memorial service to follow in the Chapel at 3:30PM, officiated by Reverend Gary Hensley.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Baptist Church, 200 Evangel Road, Spartanburg, SC 29301 or to the Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
