Thomas Henry Lloyd, Jr., age 91, a loving husband, devoted father and cherished grandfather, passed away Sunday, July 30, 2023 at Summit Hills Retirement Community.
Thomas (Tom) was born on June 15, 1932 in Washington, D.C., the son of Thomas Henry Lloyd and Thelma Andrews Lloyd. He attended public school in Arlington, VA. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, he proudly served as a U.S. Army Counterintelligence officer in Vienna, Austria for two years during the Cold War. He was married to the love of his life, Janice Holm Lloyd (Jan) in 1956.
Tom was an author, publisher and scholar. He enjoyed a distinguished career in the publishing industry, initially with the U.S. Government and subsequently with Kiplinger Magazine, the American Association of University Presses, the University of Missouri Press, Cricket Magazine and Xerox Corporation. Tom was a Renaissance man in every sense of the word – he was an athlete, avid outdoorsman, artist, playwright and sailor. He and Jan enjoyed many years of retirement sailing together in Edenton Bay. Tom and Jan spent their later years in Clinton, SC and Orange County, NC, before moving to Summit Hills Retirement Community in Spartanburg.
Tom is survived by his wife, Janice Holm Lloyd of Spartanburg, SC; daughter, Cassie Lloyd (Joe Remoll) of Moore, SC; son, Jeff Lloyd (Amy Moore) of Columbus, OH; four grandchildren, Claire Lloyd Remoll of Moore, SC, Jackson, Zachary and Caroline Lloyd of Columbus, OH; brother, Jim Lloyd (Betty) of Plymouth, NC; aunt, Mary Andrews, of Hillsborough, NC; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister, Ann Lloyd Dwyer(John) and his brother, David “Dal” Lloyd (Joyce).
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charity benefiting veterans, education, or cancer research.
