Spartanburg, SC- Virdith Anne Bates, 78, wife of the late John Carl Bates, died Sunday, May 7, 2017. Born December 30, 1938 in Brookline, MA, Virdith was the daughter of the late Phyllis Peterson Grover D’Entremont and George R. Grover . She was a graduate of Brookline High School, class of 1957, and the Katharine Gibbs Business School. In addition to that, she completed a  chaplaincy program in Kokomo, Indiana  and completed the Bereavement Facilitator Certificate Award Program of the American Academy of Bereavement. These experiences helped her in her role as the bereavement coordinator at Logansport Memorial Hospital.  Virdith was a member of the PEO Sisterhood since 1985. For last several years, she was part of the  Spartanburg PEO Chapter D, where she was the Chairman of the Courtesy Committee and was a Past Chapter President.  She was an ordained Deacon of the Presbyterian Church USA and recently became  a member of The First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg. Virdith is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Ann Bates McCarl; and granddaughter, Grace Elyssa McCarl. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Paul Luther Bates; and her Step Father, Emil D’Entremont. The funeral service will be held Saturday, May 13th at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg. It will be officiated by The Reverend Joanne R. Hull, The Reverend Craig Foster and The Reverend Heidi Campbell-Robinson. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to PEO Chapter D at 22 Old House Lane, Spartanburg, SC 29302 or to the Spartanburg Regional Hospice at P.O. Box 430 Drayton, SC 29333.
