Walter Crabtree Converse
Spartanburg - On Saturday, January 22nd Walter Crabtree Converse died unexpectedly.
Walter was born in Spartanburg on December 1st, 1932, to Stanley Witherell Converse and Priscilla (Polly) Crabtree Converse. He attended Spartanburg city schools until going to The Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN. After two years he returned to Spartanburg where he graduated from Spartanburg High School. He attended UNC Chapel Hill majoring in textile engineering and business and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. After graduation, Walter served his country as an Officer in the Marine Corps. Following his service, the textile industry drew him to New York City where he met Carolyn Fawcett a beautiful blond from Wales. They
married in December 1968 at the Little Church Around the Corner in NYC. Shortly after they moved to Spartanburg where Walter continued his association in the textile industry until 1985 when he formed Converse & Co. which the family continues to operate today.
Walter had a great love for the game of golf which he enjoyed throughout his life. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling with family and friends. He loved his dogs having many canine friends over the years. Walter was a member of The Country Club of Spartanburg, The Piedmont Club, and First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg in addition to many other Boards and organizations.
He is survived by his son and daughter in law, Justin and Anna Converse; his grandchildren, Marianna Fawcett Converse and Hugh Phillips Converse; and a nephew Stanley Witherell Converse III of Kalispell, Montana. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Carolyn and his brother, Stanley Witherell Converse, jr.
Visitation will be on Monday, January 24th from 5 pm - 7 pm at the home of Justin and Anna Converse.
A graveside service at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens will be held on Tuesday, January 25th at 2:00 pm conducted by Rev. Ansley Page.
