William David Griffiths

March 12, 1935 — February 3, 2024

Dave Griffiths, 88, of Roebuck, South Carolina, passed away quietly on February 3, 2024. He was born on March 12, 1935, in Somerville, MA, to the late Mercedes (Pendergast) and Thomas Joseph Griffiths. After high school, Dave joined the Air Force where he served as a draftsman, mostly drawing and editing maps. He was stationed in South Carolina where he met his future wife, Sybil Jolley. They married and moved to Columbia, South Carolina where they started a family. After leaving the service, Dave found a job with General Motors where he worked for around a year before leaving to join Ford Motor Company. Ford subsequently transferred him to Louisiana, so he moved with his wife and three children into a house in the New Orleans suburb of La Place. After two years, Ford transferred the family to Dearborn, Michigan to their World Headquarters. Dave continued to work for Ford, and when they became empty nesters, decided to transfer to Coral Springs, Florida to be near son John and his long-time partner, Linda LaPerna. Eventually, Dave retired from Ford and remained in Florida for a few more years until deciding to move back to South Carolina to be closer to his wife, Sybil's family. There they have lived ever since in a lovely home with their beloved cats. Beyond his professional achievements, Dave cherished his personal relationships. He is survived by his loving wife of over sixty-five years, Sybil Eileen (Jolley) Griffiths, his son John Damian Griffiths, his daughter Amy Joellen Griffiths, his brother Thomas Joseph Griffiths, Jr., his sister June Hall, his sister-in-law Donna (Jolley) Grogan, his sister-in-law Dora "Dodie" (Jolley) Sturgill, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will fondly remember him. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Mercedes and Thomas Joseph Griffiths, Sr., his brother Robert Michael Griffiths, his brother-in-law Gordon Byron Jolley, his brother-in-law Harold Irvin (Donna) Grogan, Brother and sister in law, Ronald & Anne Murdaugh, brother-in-law Lester Sturgill, and his son William David Griffiths, Jr. Their memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved them. Dave Griffiths led a life of purpose and dedication. His military service, successful career, and cherished relationships are a testament to his character and values. He was also deeply devoted to his Catholic faith. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 9th, 2024, 2 P.M., with a visitation starting at 1P.M., at the J.M. Dunbar Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to a no-kill animal shelter of your choice in Dave's memory. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to dear friend Dorothy Johnson Jones for everything she does has done for Dave and Sybil over the years. You are beloved family. And to Mary Williams from Visiting Angels for all of her continuing care and assistance.
