It is with heavy hearts that the surviving family of William Johnson Thrift, Jr. notes his passing very early on January 5, 2018, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Mr. Thrift is survived by his children, William Johnson Thrift, III (Virginia) and Emily Urban (Robert); and grandchildren, Zach and Eddie Urban. Mr. Thrift is also survived by his siblings, Ashley Thrift (Julianne), Douglas Thrift, Philip Thrift (Darlene), Katherine Riddle (Earl), and Natalie Henly (Richard). The family would like to thank Shane Thompson for his valued friendship. Mr. Thrift was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina by his parents, the late William Johnson Thrift, Sr. and the late Katherine Ormand Thrift. Mr. Thrift was a veteran of the Vietnam War, and proudly served his country in the Marine Corps, having achieved the rank of Sergeant as an expert marksman. He was an avid outdoorsman, often hunting, fishing, and camping in the Carolina wilderness. Mr. Thrift was a graduate of Myers Park High School, and attended Campbell College and Charlotte College. A visitation will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 9th from 5-7pm. The funeral service will be graveside at downtown Charlotte’s Elmwood Cemetery on Wednesday, January 10th at 11am in the family’s Ormand plot. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials in his honor be made to a veterans association or to the charity of one’s choice
