David Carroll Mitchell, husband of Norma Jean Mitchell, passed away on December 13, 2022, surrounded in love. He was born in Knoxville, TN on April 21, 1929 to B.T. And Lillian Mitchell. He was predeceased by his only sister, Barbara Mitchell Brock.
David was a loving father to his, and Norma Jean’s, children and children in-love: Steve Mitchell (Carolyn), Bill Mitchell (Susan), Susan Champion, Cathy Burnett (Paul), Chip Goodwin (Rainey), Sandy Goodwin, and Leslie Sawyer. He loved his family and traveling. David combined these two passions by spoiling his 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren with beach trips, camping trips, trips to the zoo, picnics, and, of course, train rides. He always had a camera to document the fun. David was a master gardener who’s vegetables were coveted by all. He made his famous homemade peach ice cream anytime anyone requested it (even in the winter). David always enjoyed walking in the woods and trips to pick peaches.
He worked for Southern Railway after graduating Spartanburg High School in 1947, until his retirement in 1987. His abundant energy and impeccable work ethic earned him many job advancements. He retired, after 40 years of dedicated service, as the Superintendent of Safety for the Tennessee division. During his tenure, he earned the highest respect from all his colleagues and supervisors alike. His life superlative was “Most Dependable”. If he was asked to complete something, it was guaranteed to be done and done well.
David was a true philanthropist. He donated his time, energy, and support to several organizations dear to his heart. He was a faithful member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and enjoyed chairing the buildings and grounds committee for many years. He valued education and showed his support through his contributions to Wofford College and his high school’s graduating class (1947) scholarship fund. He and Norma Jean faithfully supported the Mobile Meals mission by driving delivery routes and generous donations.
In remembrance of David, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
