William Don Back

Don went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, February 24, 2023.

Born in Sergent, Kentucky, he was the 8th son of William Jennings Brian and Belvia Back. He married the love of his life, Johnnie Fay, on August 26, 1960. They loved and lived all over the United States and overseas, before settling down and making their home in Hampton, VA.

Don joined the Army in 1958 and faithfully served 12 ½ years, finishing as a Sgt. First Class E7. He served 2 tours in Korea, 1 in Germany, and 1 in Vietnam. During his time in the military he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, 10 Overseas Service Bars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

After serving our country, he worked at Newport News Shipbuilding, before being called into Ministry. In 1977, Don and Johnnie started the Faith Church of God in the living room of their home. They purchased some land in 1984 and built the church in Hampton, VA. He served as Pastor of the church until his retirement in 2019.

Upon their retirement, Don and Johnnie relocated to Duncan, SC, enjoying gardening and spending time with local family. They were faithful members of Fairforest Church of God in Spartanburg.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and 7 brothers. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Johnnie; his 4 children: Elaine (Eddie), Patricia, Sherry (Steve), Jeffery (Tiffany); his brothers: Burnis (Linda), Milton (Atlas), and Darrell (Sandra); 8 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and many more family and friends.

Celebration of Life services will be held on Saturday, March 11, at 11AM at Fairforest Church of God in Spartanburg, SC, and on Saturday, March 18, at 5 p.m. at Faith Church of God in Hampton, VA.
