Jimmie Dunbar describes his journey to establish J.M. Dunbar Home & Crematory in Roebuck, SC as beginning before he was even born. In 1886, two men on opposite sides of South Carolina opened funeral homes: John McAlister opened McAlister Funeral Home in Charleston, and in Spartanburg, John F. Floyd opened J.F. Floyd, Furniture and Undertaking. Decades later, these legacies joined when Jimmie's parents, Mary McAlister and John Floyd Dunbar, were married.
One of six children, Jimmie began his work in the funeral home business at the age of 14 by cutting grass and putting down markers at J.F. Floyd Mortuary. The day he got his driver's license, Jimmie was sent to buy a suit and start working in the mortuary. When Jimmie graduated from The Citadel in 1983, he returned home to help his father run Dunbar Construction Company.
When Jimmie purchased Lanford-Pollard Funeral Home (now J.M. Dunbar Funeral Home & Crematory) in 2001, his dream of continuing the family’s legacy became a reality. Experiences in Jimmie’s life led him to focus on putting the ministry back into the business. He says, "We are caregivers. When people come to us, they want to know that they will be cared for."
A fourth-generation funeral home director, Jimmie continues the family tradition of caring for the community with respect, understanding, and compassion.
Now, a fifth-generation funeral director, Jimmie's son, Pate is continuing the legacy since his licensure as a Funeral Director and Embalmer in July of 2022.
